OPERATING SYSTEM UPDATES

Importance of carrying out the operating system updates in professional equipment

When manufacturers launch new products on the market, the operating system is usually named version 1.0.  They usually release software updates to add new functions or correct problems.  Something that was only seen in the computer world is now common in most products.  Recently a customer rented a camera and wanted to balance the brightness and colours with those of a different camera (same model).  Because both cameras did not have the same software version, they couldn’t be perfectly balanced.  Thus the importance of updating the camera’s operating system.

Can customers complete the updates themselves?

Some models require special equipment (jigs), others are done via network cards or memory sticks or even by swapping out a circuit board, etc.  Thus, each model has its quirks.  Furthermore, the update procedure must be perfectly understood and followed  otherwise the gear might become non-functional; in the latter case, the only solution is to return it to the manufacturer.  Finally, how can one know about the availability of new updates?  The best way of knowing if your gear’s software is up to date is to call our authorized service center.

What is the cost for an update?

The cost is related to two factors:  the parts needed and the time required to carry out the update.  Sometimes, the parts are files readily made available by the manufacturer to the service centers and customers;  some files are free or have a minimal fee.  As for the labour cost to carry out an update, it ranges between one and two hours.  Our technicians follow manufacturer training and have the skills to help out the customers.  Once the update is completed , they ensure the gear is in proper working condition and guarantee the gear.

A complete inspection of the gear is carried out to identify other potential problems.  A yearly check-up of your gear including being informed of any new updates are a good practise.  When well-maintained, down-time is decreased and the gear delivers a normal performance.  It provides the users with a more pleasant experience and this helps to maintain the equipment value on the market.

Memory sticks originally had a low capacity, typically 4 to 128 MB. The MSA model card was required for Sony cameras. These memory sticks are very difficult to find and have been replaced by the MSPRO cards. In order to use the MSPRO cards in XDCAM cameras initially configured to work with MSA cards, an operating system update must be conducted.

Specifically for the XDCAM (PDW-530) and XDCAM-HD (PDW-F330/350, PDW-F335/355), updates require an additional piece of equipment. We have acquired this gear and are capable of conducting these updates allowing you to use MSPRO (max 2 GB) cards to save menu-related
